Finchs Line
Walling on Finchs Line was kept to a minimum and was not built to
later standards seen on Devines Hill
The original ascent north of the Hawkesbury River, Finchs Line starts 2 km downstream of the present ferry crossing and winds up the escarpment with a series of sharp narrow hairpin bends. It was constructed in 1828 by the 25th Road Party and Iron Gang No 3 under Lt Jonathon Warner. In the traditional way roads had been built in the colony, Warner and the convicts under him built a simple road which was narrow and lacked drainage structures. Walling was basic, and kept to a minimum.
